I Chose…Poorly

I love the Indiana Jones movies, and one of my favorite scenes is in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. After the German drinks from the wrong cup and turns to dust, the knight calmly says, "He chose... poorly."

That line has a way of popping into my head whenever I do something... less than brilliant.

It proved true once again while watering the chickens.

I usually take the hose into the coop and fill the 10-gallon waterer in place. This time, though, I decided it would be a good idea to carry it outside so I could clean it first. So far, so good.

I could have cleaned it, carried the empty container back into the coop, and then filled it where it belonged.

But we all have choices...

And I chose poorly.

Instead, I filled it with all 10 gallons of water before moving it. I conveniently forgot that 10 gallons weighs about 83 pounds. It wasn't too bad lifting it a few inches and carrying it a few feet back to the coop.

Then I reached the doorway.

Standing between me and success was the short gate across the entrance that's there to keep the chickens in and the dogs out.

Once again, I had choices.

I could have set the waterer down and dumped out a few gallons. I could have removed the gate.

But...

I chose poorly.

Determined to prove that stubbornness is not the same thing as wisdom, after a few pulls, I gave it one mighty heave.

The waterer cleared the gate.

Landing on top of my flip-flop-clad foot.

As I stood there assessing my life choices (and my toes), I realized this whole ordeal could have been avoided if I had made one better decision at any of the many crossroads along the way. Instead, I kept doubling down on a bad plan.

Thankfully, this lesson only cost me a sore foot and a bruised ego.

Life, however, often presents us with much more important choices. Rarely do we end up in trouble because of one giant mistake. More often, it's a series of small decisions where we ignore the easier, wiser path because we're in a hurry, too stubborn, or convinced we're already committed.

I'm hoping the next time I hear that little voice say, "You chose poorly," I'll stop long enough to reconsider before I make the next choice.

And maybe... just maybe... I'll wear real shoes.

  • For Such a Time as This: A Queen’s Story

    By Sherry | July 7, 2026

I’ve discovered that being a second-year beekeeper is much harder than being a first-year beekeeper. I came out of winter with four healthy hives, and they are all thriving. While that’s a blessing, it has also meant spending the last few months chasing swarm preparations, relocating queen cells, and trying to stay one step ahead…

  • Resource Hive: REBOOT

    By Sherry | June 12, 2026

The Queen Hotel had a bit more excitement than I anticipated shortly after opening. While moving the resource hive to its new stand, I spotted my new queen in the middle of a ball of bees. At first, I hoped the workers were simply surrounding and protecting her, but I quickly began to suspect they…

  • Bee Prepared:  My First Resource Hive

    By Sherry | June 10, 2026

I recently set up my first resource hive after spending the last month working to prevent swarms in my bee yard. I decided to give it a try because I wanted a place to move older queens when colonies showed signs of swarming, while also creating an opportunity to raise my own queens if needed.…

  • Boaz and the Great Pillow Heist

    By Sherry | April 28, 2026

I forgot to put my pillows up again today… Boaz has a serious obsession with my pillows. One evening when I got home from work, I walked into what looked like complete chaos-my living room, kitchen, porch, and back deck were covered in feathers. At first, I honestly thought there had been some kind…

Let the Sun Do the Work: DIY Solar Wax Melter Guide My DIY projects don’t always turn out the way I hope, but this solar wax melter is one I’m genuinely proud of. I’ve tried a handful of other methods-crock pot, electric skillet, and more-but they were all messy, slow, and a hassle to clean…

  • Peep Peep! It’s Chick Season Again

    By Sherry | March 13, 2026

It’s baby chick season again! Over the years, I’ve experimented with several different ways of raising chicks while they grow big enough to join the rest of the flock. My first year, the chicks stayed inside the house until they had feathers. After that, they moved out to the garage before eventually making their way…

  • A Moment with the Queen: Laying the Future of the Hive

    By Sherry | March 7, 2026

It’s always gratifying to spot the queen during a hive inspection. I was especially excited to capture a clip of this hardworking queen laying the next generation of pollinators. A queen’s work is never done. During peak season she can lay 1,500-2,000 eggs per day, ensuring the colony continues to grow and thrive. The…

  • Winter Food Check: A Quick Peek for Food

    By Sherry | January 3, 2026

Today we briefly opened the tops of the hives to check on their winter food stores. This time of year it’s important to make sure the bees still have enough reserves to carry them through the colder months when there is no foraging. We did our best not to disturb the cluster. Fortunately, most of…

  • From the Hive to the Jar: Our First Harvest

    By Sherry | August 1, 2025

Last weekend, Dad helped me harvest my first batch of honey. After months of watching the bees build comb and store nectar, it was exciting to finally collect the honey they had worked so hard to produce. We made sure to leave each hive with a full deep of honey to help them get through…
