Let the Sun Do the Work: DIY Solar Wax Melter Guide

My DIY projects don’t always turn out the way I hope, but this solar wax melter is one I’m genuinely proud of. I’ve tried a handful of other methods—crock pot, electric skillet, and more—but they were all messy, slow, and a hassle to clean up. I even considered buying one online, but when I realized they didn’t come with plexiglass (arguably the hardest part to source), I decided I might as well build my own.

After doing some research and watching a few YouTube videos, I put one together—and it worked incredibly well. The best part is how easy it is to deal with afterward. Cleanup is minimal; I just toss the aluminum pan and cheesecloth once they get too dirty.

I mainly use the wax to coat new foundation, and the process couldn’t be simpler. I add a bit of water to an electric skillet, set the entire aluminum pan in a few inches of water, and let it do its thing. When I’m done, there’s nothing to scrub—I just put the pan back in the solar melter, ready for the next batch.

All season long, I keep the melter right next to my hives and drop in comb whenever I’m doing hive maintenance. It’s efficient, low-maintenance, and easily one of the most useful projects I’ve taken on.
